Global carbon emissions are growing rapidly, now a staggering 40 gigatonnes per year, up from 6 billion tonnes in 1950.
Allowing global temperatures to increase by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels will cause irreversible climate change, damage to farming and crops, global famine, the extinction of species and more frequent natural disasters.
According to the UN, to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees by 2050 we must limit our per-person emissions to 2 tCO2e per year. Australia is currently the 8th worst country in the world for per capita emissions with 15.22 tCO2e per person trailing the US (13.68 tCO2e) and even China (6.59 tCO2e) per person.
